This homemade hummus recipe is healthy, delicious, versatile, and the easiest ever to make. It’s bound to be a weekly staple.
If you’re a major hummus fiend like me, you have to try your hand at making it from scratch. Hummus is one of those foods you just have to make at home. It’s SO much better than store-bought hummus, and it’s SO simple to make. It’s also cheaper! (especially if you eat a lot of hummus)
All you’ll need is some chickpeas, tahini, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and a couple of spices.
For the chickpeas, for maximum freshness, I like to get the bags of dried chickpeas and soak them overnight, then cook them a bit before making the hummus.
The other, much easier method is to just get canned chickpeas which will already be soaked and cooked. These can be used straight out of the can.
In terms of spices, the basic ones to include are salt and cumin. But you can get creative and add other spices. Turmeric, for example, gives it a nice colour and flavour.
The other thing you’ll need is a powerful blender or a food processor. I use a Vitamix which gets the job done easily (I use the tamper to push the chickpeas down while it’s blending, instead of having to stop each time to mix and scrape down the sides).
If you don’t have a powerful blender like a Vitamix, you can probably still work with a normal blender (it’s what we used for years before we had a Vitamix), you’ll just need to add more water, frequently stop and stir by hand, and do it in smaller batches. And you’ll have to settle for a less smooth hummus.
You can also use a food processor to get a silky smooth hummus.
There are all sorts of methods to get the creamiest hummus, like soaking and cooking the chickpeas for a certain amount of time, or removing the skins from the chickpeas (but really, who has time for that?!). This recipe doesn’t use any fancy tricks, but it’s still so good and has everything you really need. The flavour is there. The texture is there. With enough blending, you can get it as creamy as you want. I promised easy hummus, so here is my easy homemade hummus recipeā¦
How to make hummus at home in a blender
Ingredients:
- 2 cups cooked chickpeas (roughly one 19oz can)
- 1/3 cup tahini
- 3 tbsp fresh lemon juice (about 3/4 of a lemon)
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 3 tbsp water (add more as needed) (I like to use the starchy water from the chickpeas)
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
Directions:
- If you are using dried chickpeas, put them to soak overnight. The next day, strain the chickpeas and put in a pot of salted water to boil for about 20 minutes.
2. Add all ingredients to the blender.
3. Blend until smooth, making sure to scrape down the sides when needed.
4. Taste and season as needed.
5. Serve, garnish, and enjoy!

How to make hummus creamy
If your hummus is not turning out as creamy as you would like, you can try a couple different things:
- Blend it for longer
- Add more water
- Use the starchy water that comes from the chickpea can or that you boiled the chickpeas in.
- Cook the chickpeas for longer. If using chickpeas straight from the can, try cooking them before using.
- Remove the skin from the chickpeas before using.
- Try doing a smaller or larger batch. Sometimes when there is too much stuff in the blender at once, it has a hard time thoroughly blending it and only blends the bottom portion. On the other hand, if there is too little stuff in the blender, it will flick it out to the sides and only blend a small portion in the middle.
Why does my hummus taste bitter?
The ingredient, tahini, has a slight bitterness to it. If your hummus is turning out too bitter, there might be too much tahini in it – add more chickpeas to mellow it out.
Also, with tahini, sometimes it’s just the brand – different brands of tahini can have different tastes and consistencies. Test out different kinds to find a high-quality tahini that you like.
Other strong flavours that can overpower the taste if too much is added include: salt, garlic, and lemon. In all cases, add more chickpeas as well as more of the other ingredients until the taste is balanced.
